Life Happens

Hi blog readers, long time no see. My last post was um December 23, 2013 and I think it’s safe to say that I’ve been super busy. I graduated college from UCM and have been busy expanding my business.

We moved out of the 2 bedroom apartment and in to a space at 125 W Pine Street in Warrensburg Missouri. Although we won’t be open to the public all the time, we will eventually have retail store hours. It was terribly exciting and a great move for my company.

renting studio location

I went to my youngest brother in laws wedding vacation with my husband and his family. The location was beautiful and we enjoyed actually being able to take part in a family member’s special day for once. We haven’t been able to do that before and it was nice to have the funds to do so now. Prior to that trip we’d intended to move home to Arizona at the end of fall, but events from the trip made Cody and I realize that it was best to stay where we were. So we’re in Warrensburg MO for the long haul.

go to a wedding

Since we’re staying in the burg, my younger sister moved to Warrensburg and now works for my company. I love that she’s here. She’s amazing and doing great things for my sanity. I am so happy that she’s here and is amazing. I was lost without her before and didn’t realize it.

I’m working with various companies to produce products for them and actively expanding my product line. It’s been a hectic year so far and although I don’t post here often, I do post on our facebook page.  You should follow us there too and join the conversation.

Redesigns and New Things

I’ve been working on updating some our designs since some of them were either things I made when geek details first started or things that I didn’t make because I didn’t have time. I’m working on making time to make more designs though and get things listed. It’s been pretty fun to just design to design and not worry about if it’ll sell or not.

It’s been fun and I’m hoping to keep adding more new product to the store on a more regular basis. If you have something you’d like to see on one of our buttons, let me know and I’ll try to make it happen.

I’m also working on some new bracelet designs for the small bracelets I’ll be carrying in the store soon. Those will be super fun AND i’ll be doing a giveaway on the facebook page for them once they’re up in the store!

Oh Hello There!

Wow. It’s been almost a whole month since I posted. It’s been… crazy. We’ve had so much to deal with in the geek details studio and I’ve been barely keeping my head above water.

We had a series of unfortunate events that included my business laptop breaking, printers on the fritz, button maker breaking, twice as many holiday orders as forecasted, chronic illnesses, 13 hour days,  running out of shipping labels, running out of envelopes, running out of… stuff. I’m not even typing it all out here, but trust me when I say it’s been just absolutely insane here and if I hadn’t just asked my doctor to put me on anxiety meds right before all of this happened, I might not have survived.

We’ll probably ship out our 4,000 order for the month tomorrow and we’ve already shipped out 6300+ handmade items this month. THIS. MONTH!

We’ve made and shipped so much that I just can’t even grasp the numbers. I would not have survived the influx of orders + finals week without some really great new helpers for the studio.

We’re reorganized the studio though and KB no longer lives there. She’s headed to New Zealand for a semester and although I’m going to miss her like crazy, I’m so excited for her to experience her semester abroad.

I’m also excited for this next chapter of Geek Details and I can’t wait to share business space photos tomorrow now that it’s closer to being done. I’m so excited to have time to blog again because it means I have time to have a life again. Up until today, it’s pretty much been work + school with little time for my husband, kids, pups, or friends. I’m looking forward to being able to take a break and do a couple things just for me/my family because I can.

Brass Cuff Bracelets

We’ve been busy at the studio, too busy to post about what we’re doing. Our new line of brass bracelets is going well. We come out with new designs every week and we’re working hard to get them all listed.

A woman’s word meets the military code: Rape in Warrensburg MO

tabitha phelegy

This is  Tabitha Phegley. Ms. Phegley to her students. Tab to me. She’s smart and kind and incredibly caring. Together we laugh so hard that our sides hurt and tears roll down our cheeks. She’s one of the strongest women I know.

She’s a preschool teacher at Ridge View Elementary in Warrensburg, Mo. Or at least she was until she was placed on administrative leave this past week.

The Kansas City Star just did an article about her rape, the trial, and the aftermath.

I know I’ve posted about this case fairly often in the past months. I’ve been suspended on facebook for speaking out. I’ve talked about the case on any platform I can again, and yet again, and then again. I do so because I have a large, active friend base and this case is important to me. I don’t feel that being an expensive military asset gives someone permission to use another person’s body without permission. We should hold those people to a higher standard, not give them a free pass to do what they want.

So what do I want from this? I want people to know what really happens in the military justice system when rape allegations are made. I want people to be aware so that we can help change the system. Something is clearly broken and needs fixing. A Pentagon report estimates as many as 26,000 service members (civilian victims were not tallied) were sexually assaulted in 2012, but as few as 3,374 actually followed through and filed complaints. In those, military prosecutors won only 238 convictions. Does that seem right to you?

I’m posting it here because I feel that it’s important for people to know how the military can treat survivors of rape. I want people in my local area to know what happened to one of our preschool teachers and what she’s dealt with post rape (including being put on administrative leave from the school where she taught). She’s move five times. We’d had websites hacked. She’s had her brakes tampered with. She’s been harassed at work.

And while I’m on my soap box, I’d like to share a petition that I support (but did not start). It asks for the immediate removal of the principal that harassed her because as it turns out, this principal has a history of harassment towards teachers, parents, and students. Check out the petition and if you are so inclined to help us with the immediate removal of Principal Ginger Cochran from Ridge View Elementary in Warrensburg MO, we’d appreciate it.
