Building a garden bed

I tried to garden last year and failed miserably due to picking a bad part of the yard for my garden. I’m not making the same mistake this year :) Jordan and I picked up some 6 foot dog eared untreated cedar fence boards for $1.97 at Menards in Sedalia MO. Jordan checked the boards for straightness and we attempted to load all 12 boards plus the 8 foot post in to my new car.

It all barely fit, but it fit! We took it all home and waited for Cody to get home from work so he could help build it. My garden box is three boards high and 4 feet by 6 feet. It’s a good sized garden bed area and we’re planning on making several for the yard. This was the test box.

After a tiny bit of work around a lovely fire, we finally had a finished box. I’ll be honest, the guys did damn near all the work on this one… Please disregard the background of yucky yard. I’m working on it :) I wanted to live in the house a little while before we started digging stuff up though. I’m glad I did too because there’s a whole section that pops up hostas and those would have been removed if I hadn’t waited.

The box is level, the yard is not :) We’ll slowly be fixing that. The master plan is to eventually replace the old rotted fence, add in quite a few more garden boxes at the back yard (we marked out stakes for them too), put a brick pathway around the garden boxes, small fence with gate in front of the boxes so our dogs don’t eat the produce, and a bunch of other stuff. Slow and steady :)

It’s not much but it’s a start :) Can’t wait to plant the veggies we started in the kitchen.

Hey looks great but how did you handle drainage? I’m super curious because I’m really considering a few raised beds for veg in my backyard.
